Por Ali Resopla is the sustainable architecture project that we submitted to the competition “Tres bibliotecas Municipales en Madrid” (Three Municipal Libraries in Madrid) by the Competitions Office COAM (Official Association of Architects in Madrid), and for which we obtained an Honourable Mention. This project was carried out by the architects Nieves Mestre and Eduardo Roigwith the support of Alejandro Bosqued Navarro, an expert in sustainability and energy efficiency in construction.

A great singular and architectural project for the future construction of the Municipal Library of Las Tablas, in the Madrid neighborhood of the same name. A proposal whose name evokes the Moby-Dick novel, through the morphology of the architectural piece and which also proposes a bioclimatic solution based on passive strategies, and which is defined as a solar pavilion.

URBAN STRATEGY

The urban strategy is adapted to the requirements of the ordinance, prioritizing optimal solar geometry. A new alignment oriented to the South is proposed, but clearly separated from the boundary with the Nursery School to minimize solar obstruction on it. The rest of the setbacks, 5 meters long, are unfolded with the purpose of invigorating the free public space around this facility, seeking crossed views and enabling intermediate living areas. A soft border articulates the library’s perimeter and official alignment.

The population of Las Tablas, from 30 to 45 years old and mostly children under 0 to 14 years old, begins to move around by bike and scooter, items that they buy online, as it is the neighborhood that makes the most online orders in Spain.

The marginal location, not equidistant, of the endowment in the neighborhood of Las Tablas urges us to propose a parking solution for this type of vehiclewith very high capacity.

BIOCLIMATIC SOLUTION

The building is defined as a “solar pavilion”, supported structurally and thermodynamically on a high-inertia wall that shelters it on its north facade. This wall becomes a radiant wall, fed by a small solar thermal catchment field of 16m2 on the roof.

PASSIVE STRATEGIES

An optimized collector facade with the necessary glazed openings and little thermal inertia, allows direct and indirect solar gain in south orientation, depending on the elevation. Strategy that is complemented with accumulation and thermal damping in a very massive opposite facade. The “defensive” regarding the Madrid summer is based on natural ventilation through courtyard and at night and solar protection.

SUNSHINE . OPTIMAL SOLAR GEOMETRY

To make the most of the proposed strategies,an orientation with longitudinal N-S and transverse E-W façades is proposed. . The building is located on the site, so that its south façade does not become shaded by the obstacle posed by the surrounding residential buildings. The worst day would be December 21 at 2:15 p.m.

TIME AND PROGRAM

The entire program is developed on two superimposed ground floors, each of them accessible from one of the streets that limit the plot to the East and West. The parking program and unheated facilities or spaces are conceived as an exterior corridor, so that they do not penalize the building’s surrounding climatically. The project proposes an optional alternative that minimizes this area and converts it into surface parking, an option that has already been shown to be more sustainable in terms of urban and climatic functionality.

OPEN TIME MANAGEMENT

The access through Eunate street (ground floor) is conceived for the rooms considered central to the library program -those for use in the morning. The plant aligned with Castillo de Candanchú street contains the program defined in the specifications as “Underground” and the rest of the rooms associated with the cultural center, a predominant use is expected in the afternoon. This programmatic packaging in “morning” and “afternoon” use bands allows optimization of conditioning consumption. Early morning demand is concentrated in the main plant (less than half the volume); As the hours go by, the thermal inertia of the building participates in the tempering subject to occupancy loads to supply the demand in the afternoon (corresponding to the total volume).

WRAPPING

A constructionsystem based on modulation and repetition, systematization and prefabrication is proposed. In this way, the project is able to minimize the energy resources of the construction process and reduce the time and price of the work. . The atmosphere is domestic. The proposal divides the program into two buildings, reducing the scale of intervention: one corridor for large-area programs and another for smaller premises.

e1.

A visually permeable corrugated solid polycarbonate first skin protects from wind, rain, and creates generous spaces with abundant sunlight. Thanks to the greenhouse effect in winter and natural ventilation in summer, these spaces represent true thermal transition zones, which will preheat the air in winter and provide shade in the summer period. This polycarbonate skin allows solar radiation to pass through, generating a greenhouse effect and this heat is stored in the construction elements (slabs, interior volumes) with high thermal inertia. During periods of overheating, the wrapping is protected from solar radiation thanks to roller blinds made of solid wood slats, and swing openings on the facade and roof that generate natural convection ventilation that will refresh the interior air.

e2.

The second skin is conceived as a passive wrapping for hot rooms (U=0.15W/m2K). It is a structure of prefabricated walls and floors, formed by a skeleton of fir wood and solid wood boards, filled with wood fiber insulation (λ=0.038W/mK), in a system that is sealed against rain and steam. The openings, more contained in number and area, are conceived with fixed frames and insulating windows with thermal bridge breakage and triple insulating glazing with Argon (Ug=0.6 W/m2K). These prefabricated volumes will have anexterior and interior cladding in triple-layer fir wood panels.
